Lime is an essential ingredient in creating high-quality paper of various thicknesses.
In technical terms, lime products are used in the pulp and paper industry in the recausticizing cycle to recycle sodium hydroxide for use in the pulp digester.
Lime products are also used to make precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), a chemically-formed calcium carbonate having fine particle size which is used as filler and coating pigment in the manufacture of paper.
PCC is used for paper coating, and as a filler in paper. It imparts better opacity, gloss, high brightness, surface finishing and improves printability.
Most importantly, it reduces the amount of wood fiber required to make paper, subsequently reducing the number of trees needed.
